We got to shoot the new Savage 16/116 Bear Hunter. The model we shot was the 116 in .300 Win Mag and we were impressed with Savages twist on/off muzzle break as it made the recoil very manageable. The rifle has a 23″ medium Continue reading Savage 16/116 Bear Hunter – New for 2011
Ruger LC9 9mm – SHOT Show Media Day
The Ruger LC9 is a great addition to Ruger’s handgun lineup. I own a .380 sub-compact but would rather run than shoot someone with it. I don’t buy into the story that a .380 is enough gun but think it might be better than nothing. The LC9 solves both the sub-compact easy to carry problem and the power issue, so I think it’s a great product. I thought that the recoil was quite manageable and not too uncomfortable. However, after watching the guy next to me shoot in the Continue reading Ruger LC9 9mm – SHOT Show Media Day
Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle – SHOT Show Media Day
We had the opportunity to shoot the new Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle in .308 at the 2011 SHOT Show Media Day. The rifle comes with all the features you’d expect on a Ruger like controlled-round-feed and claw extractor and then adds a few Continue reading Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle – SHOT Show Media Day
CAA Tactical RONI G1 SHOT Show Media Day 2011
The RONI-G1 by CAA Tactical allows the user to very quickly turn his Glock handgun into a carbine. No tools are required for the conversion and it makes a handgun shoot like a carbine. I was impressed with how fast it pointed and how easy it was to handle. If you aren’t law enforcement or military its my understanding that you will need to register Continue reading CAA Tactical RONI G1 SHOT Show Media Day 2011
Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14×44 Rapid Z 800 Review
Last summer I decided that if the perfect hunting scope existed, I would find it. Of course “perfect” is subjective as everyone has a different opinion of what “perfect” is. My perfect bucket list is known to change depending on application. For a medium to long range hunting scope I think its important that it not be too big or heavy, have good glass, turrets that can be dialed accurately, enough eye relief to be used on a magnum rifle, have a good reticle with the ability to make fast holdover shots, enough magnification to make the long shot, waterproof, fogproof, durable, etc. It also needs a good manufacture warranty to back it up just in case your horse rolls down a mountain with it. Last, it shouldn’t require robbing a bank to buy one. I ruled out an unbelievable number of good scopes for one reason or another, including some very big name expensive scopes. A scope would seem like it was working but then would fall short in one of the categories I listed as being important. Things got so bad that I had an excel sheet with specs, eye relief, field of view, price, adjustment range, and any other data that I could get in an excel spreadsheet. I was analyzing reticles and comparing glass in scopes every opportunity Continue reading Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14×44 Rapid Z 800 Review
Shooter – Ballistics Calculator for Android Review
Shooter, the ballistic calculator designed for Android phones has changed the way I shoot as well as use a ballistic calculator. While the calculations it does are not new or revolutionary, the fact that it is on my phone is. In the past I had to tape drop charts to my stock. If I was changing elevation, changing bullets or loads, or experiencing large temperature fluctuations, the drop chart changes and isn’t as accurate. Because I am constantly playing with different bullets and loads things change frequently. It would take dozens of pages of printed dropcharts to come close to the amount of information that Shooter can calculate in seconds.
If you don’t read through any of the rest of this review know two things: 1) the ballistic calculations work and are Continue reading Shooter – Ballistics Calculator for Android Review
