Nothing could be worse than having a child have an accident with a gun. As adults and responsible gun owners we have a duty to keep firearms out of the hands of children and teenagers who don’t understand the danger. We also don’t want our firearms in the hands of those that might do us harm with them. Even if our own children understand the dangers and wouldn’t think of touching our firearms without permission/supervision nothing is to say the neighbor kid will show as much restraint. Teaching our children is also important as they will someday be at a friends house and be shown a firearm by a friend. They need to understand the danger.
So how do you have a gun available for self protection in an instant and at the same time keep it away from those who shouldn’t have access? Obviously, a gun safe is an excellent way to keep guns out of the wrong hands. The problem is that it can take some time to get the combination input correctly and get it open. When I’m in a hurry it takes longer. The variety of safes that weigh 300-1000lbs are also hard to take with you on vacation and they’re really hard to fit in the front seat of your car. If you’re reading this article, you probably already know something about Glocks and would like to skip the part where we talk about what they’re made of and how many militaries and police departments around the globe use them. I’ll start with the changes and the important stuff and then address the over-discussed details that absolutely must be found in every article on a Glock handgun.
As of right now, February 2010, the Glock GEN 4 is only available in the G22 and G17. The G22 is chambered in .40 S&W and is considered a “standard” size Glock. The G17 is chambered in 9mm (9x19mm) and is also considered “standard” size. Glock is planning on releasing the GEN 4 in all of their models. As far as time frame goes, they will release the G19 and G23 this fall. The next models have yet to be determined and I was told their release will be based on demand.

We had the opportunity to shoot the new for 2010 Glock GEN 4 at the SHOT Show Media day. The major changes in the Glock GEN 4 are the dual recoil spring and the ability to change the grip shape with plastic backstrap inserts that snap on and off. I was personally impressed by the recoil reduction. Glock isn’t publishing exactly how much recoil is reduced but one of the Glock employees said he had 9000 rounds through the new GEN 4 and he felt like the recoil was reduced at least 15%. I also heard numbers as high as 20% but so far I don’t know of anything official. We hope to do a full review of the Glock GEN 4 so watch our site for that in the future.
