The depth gauge on the bottom of a set of calipers can be used to measure the seating depth of the primer. It is hard to get an accurate measurement and care must be used not tilt the caliper against the primer while pushing the gauge in. Once you have seated a few primers to the proper depth you can begin to judge if they are seated properly by runing your thumb over the bottom of the case.
